Motorized Patio Shades in Dallas: Cost, Options & What to Expect
June 18, 2026 · 7 min read

If you've ever sat on a Dallas patio in August, you already know why motorized patio shades have become the most-requested outdoor upgrade in DFW custom homes. The question most homeowners ask first isn't whether they want them — it's what they cost and what's actually worth paying for.
What you'll typically pay in DFW
Across the projects we install from Westlake to Prosper, motorized zip-track solar screens land around $17 per square foot for the shade itself, plus installation. A single opening on a covered patio usually falls between $2,200 and $4,500 fully installed. A wraparound outdoor living room with three or four openings is commonly $9,000 to $15,000.
Louvered aluminum pergolas are a separate category and run $5,000 to $25,000+ depending on footprint, color, and integrated lighting. The two products are often paired — the pergola gives you a louvered roof for sun and rain control, and the zip screens drop down the sides to block low-angle west sun.
Why motorized beats manual in Texas
Texas weather isn't kind to crank handles. Between humidity, blowing dust, and the sheer size of modern DFW patios, manual shades get used a handful of times and then sit. Motorized systems get used daily because they're effortless: one tap on a remote, wall switch, or phone.
Every system we install uses AOK motors, which are rated for the temperature swings we see here and carry a 10-year warranty. Wind sensors are an option we recommend on any patio facing open sky — they retract the shade automatically if gusts exceed your set threshold.
Fabric and color choices that actually matter
Solar fabric openness ranges from 1% (near-blackout) to 10% (the most see-through). For DFW west-facing patios, 3% is the sweet spot: it blocks 80%+ of solar heat gain and 95%+ of UV while letting you keep a clear view of the yard.
On color, darker fabrics paradoxically give you a better outward view because they reduce glare on the inside of the screen. Lighter fabrics bounce more heat back to the patio. Most of our DFW clients land on charcoal or bronze.
What to expect on install day
A typical residential install — two to three openings — is a one-day job. We arrive in the morning, mount the headboxes, route the low-voltage wiring through the soffit, set the limits on each motor, and walk you through the remote, app, and any voice integration before we leave.
Larger projects with multiple sides or integrated pergola work are scheduled across two days. Either way, your patio is usable the same day we finish.
Frequently asked
- Are motorized patio shades worth it in Dallas?
- For any patio that sees afternoon west sun — which is most DFW patios — yes. Surface temperatures drop 15–20°F within minutes of the shade coming down, and the daily-use convenience of motorization is what makes the investment actually pay off versus a manual shade that never gets used.
- Can I add motorized shades to an existing patio?
- Yes. We retrofit existing covered patios and pergolas all the time. As long as there's a header beam or fascia we can mount to, no construction is required.
- Do they work with Alexa or Google Home?
- Yes. AOK motors integrate with Alexa, Google Home, and most major smart-home hubs, plus the Smart Home app for direct phone control.
