Plantation Shutters vs Roller Shades in Humid Texas Climates
June 10, 2026 · 6 min read

Dallas–Fort Worth doesn't have Houston-level humidity, but we still get enough summer moisture — plus dramatic temperature swings — to punish window treatments that weren't built for it. Here's how plantation shutters and roller shades actually compare in the climate we live in.
Plantation shutters: what holds up, what doesn't
Real wood shutters look beautiful but can warp or check over a few DFW summers, especially in west-facing rooms with big temperature swings. Composite or vinyl-wrapped shutters handle the humidity better and look nearly identical from across the room.
If you want the look of wood for a study or formal dining, hardwood is a fine choice. For bathrooms, laundry rooms, and any heavily sunlit space, composite is the safer call.
Roller shades: what holds up, what doesn't
Modern roller shade fabrics are dimensionally stable across temperature and humidity ranges, and the mechanisms are sealed enough that DFW conditions don't degrade them. The weak point on cheap roller shades is the lift mechanism — beaded chains stretch, spring tensions fail.
Motorized roller shades sidestep that entirely. AOK motors are rated for the temperature swings we see here and carry a 10-year warranty.
Cost comparison
Plantation shutters typically run $25–$45 per square foot installed. Custom roller shades run $15–$30 per square foot installed depending on fabric and motorization.
Shutters add resale value distinctly — they're considered a permanent home feature. Roller shades are considered furniture-grade.
Room-by-room recommendation
Primary bedroom: blackout roller shades behind drapery is hard to beat. Bathrooms: composite plantation shutters. Living rooms with big windows: motorized roller shades, often layered with drapery panels. Home offices: shutters for that classic look, roller shades if glare control on monitors is the priority.
